This typewritten recipe is dated March 1974 and attributed to Lois Wiley.
Ingredients for cake:
- 1 cup chopped dates
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup boiling water
- 2 cups sifted flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg beaten
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts
- 1 cup chopped dates
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts
- Melted butter (see instructions)
- Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and pour over date and let stand
- In separate bowl, combine dry ingredients and mix
- Add dates, egg, nuts and butter and mix well
- Transfer mixture to a greased and floured 8" square baking pan
- In separate bowl, mix all topping ingredients with enough melted butter to hold the mixture together
- Spread topping mixture over uncooked cake batter that is in the baking pan
- Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes
